Abstract:
We start considering the problem of a D3 brane ending on pqwebs of 5 branes. We find the N=2 3d theories describing the systems and show that they admit different dual descriptions, related by 'piece-wise' Abelian mirror symmetry. Interestingly, some of the dual phases involve monopole operators in the superpotential. Similar techniques work for non supersymmetric Abelian particle-vortex dualities and/or bosonizations.
We then consider generalizations to non Abelian gauge theories, focussing on U(N_c) with N_f flavors and N=2 supersymmetry, modified by monopole potentials. Starting from the theory without such potentials, if the monopole potential is relevant, there is an RG flow to the monopole-modified theory. We show that, even if the monopole potential is irrelevant, a monopole-modified theory can nevertheless exist, and provide an explicit, Lagrangian, weakly coupled UV completion of the monopole-modified theory. We also provide an electric-magnetic dual description and prove that the S^3 partition functions coincide.
